If you told a younger me that one day we'd have trash cans that could park themselves at the curb, I would not have believed you. But I also would have longed for this day as I dragged the family bin up an unnecessarily long gravel driveway when it was my turn in the chore rotation.

But the future is now, and self-parking trash cans are no longer the things of my 12-year-old imagination. SmartCan is upon us.

Gizmodo reports that SmartCan is currently in development. When it comes out, the can will follow a pre-programmed schedule from a companion app and take itself to the curb every trash pickup day.

"SmartCan eliminates the need to take a homeowner's garbage can to the curb by providing a plug-and-play motorized trashcan attachment and mobile application," SmartCan's website says.

The cans seem to rely on docking stations to "know" where to go at the beginning and end of each trash day. As of now, there aren't any details regarding a release date or pricing.

Until its official release, we at least have the GIF.
