Another Aldi in Pensacola? Proposal for North Davis Highway location filed

The early stages of yet another Pensacola Aldi are apparently in the works.

ISG, a national site designer and engineering firm, filed for a pre-application meeting with Escambia County on Aug. 12, detailing the company's plan to propose building an Aldi grocery store on North Davis Highway.

The proposed new Aldi at 6677 North Davis Highway would encompass 20,442 square feet. A Western Union bank currently takes up a portion of that property. ISG proposed removing that building to make way for the Aldi and also sent the county a drawing site plan, along with the proposal.

Plans submitted by a site designer and engineering firm indicate a new Aldi could be constructed at 6677 North Davis Highway.

Zoning for the property requires at least 82 parking stalls, and the company proposed providing 95 spaces, according to ISG's proposal. The existing right-in/right-out access from North Davis Highway would remain with the proposed Aldi site design, along with a new proposed full access from East Burgess Road.

The next step, according to the county's Planning and Zoning Department, is for the Aldi pre-application to be reviewed by the county's Development Review Committee at an Aug. 25 meeting.

"Then it's up to the (site designer) to take the comments and they'll decide if they want to pursue it further," said Escambia County urban planner Christina Smith on Wednesday. "As long as the comments are simple for them, and it's like, 'Oh, this is what we expected.' Then it's up to them to proceed."

Two other Pensacola Aldi locations and a Navarre store have been in the works in Pensacola for multiple years.

In a statement to the News Journal, an Aldi representative did not comment on the potential North Davis location but confirmed that construction will start next month on the Navarre Aldi and one of the Pensacola sites.

Site plans filed by Aldi during the course of the past three years have indicated the German-based supermarket chain has plans to build local grocery stores at:

  • 10290 Blue Angel Parkway in Pensacola
  • 4830 Mobile Highway in Pensacola
  • U.S. 98 and Ortega Street in Navarre

In September 2018, a 2.15-acre lot off of Mobile Highway was purchased by real estate holding company Terra Pensacola LLC for $1.35 million, before being transferred to Aldi in January 2019, according to Escambia County property records.

Documents show developers are planning to build a 20,500-square-foot grocery store at the site. Smith said Wednesday the county received an official site plan submittal on the Mobile Highway Aldi earlier this year and that location is "getting close" to approval.

Site prep for the 19,000-square-foot Navarre Aldi began in January 2020. Building plans were then officially submitted for the Navarre Aldi on April 1. The new store is expected to be the anchor of a larger shopping complex, with other commercial stores in the works as well. The News Journal reported in April that a Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant, T-Mobile store and possibly a Popeyes chicken chain also are coming to the complex.

Documents filed with Escambia County's Development Review Committee in January 2020 revealed Aldi's plans for the Blue Angel Parkway store. That location is at the intersection of Pine Forest Road and Longleaf Drive.

In February, Aldi also broke ground on a 564,000-square-foot distribution center in Loxley, Alabama

Aldi also announced last winter that the new regional headquarters building and distribution center in Baldwin County will be equipped to service up to 100 Aldi stores in the Florida Panhandle, Alabama, southern Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana. It is expected to open by the end of 2022.
