SHALIMAR — An arrest has been made in an almost 38-year-old sexual battery case thanks to DNA evidence and the persistence of an Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office investigator, a OCSO news release said Tuesday.

The sexual battery occurred in June 1983 at a Florosa apartment complex along U.S. Highway 98.

The victim was sleeping in her home about  2 a.m. when a man she did not know entered the apartment and placed a pillowcase over her head, OCSO investigator Kelly Henderson said in a YouTube video discussing the case. The man sexually battered the victim, who at the time was a 24-year-old airman at Hurlburt Field, and told her if she made any noise he would shoot her.

Decades passed without no suspect until the DNA profile of 58-year-old Richard Elliot Lane was recently identified as a match in the case. Investigators tracked Lane to Las Vegas where he is facing separate criminal charges. Lane will be extradited to Okaloosa County to face a sexual battery charge after his Nevada case is resolved.

"It was very rewarding," Henderson said of the arrest. "I did not realize how rewarding it was until I talked to the victim and reached out to her and felt her emotion through the phone. I haven't even met her in person yet, but to hear her emotion and gratitude for us continuing to work this case was just amazing."
