CRESTVIEW — A citizen's tip led Okaloosa County sheriff's deputies to a fugitive who allegedly shot at a man operating a bulldozer on Mare Creek Road on Tuesday.

In a Wednesday news release, the Sheriff’s Office announced that Ronald Wayne Allen, 39, of Crestview, was arrested and charged with multiple felonies in connection with the incident.

The victim reported that he was operating a bulldozer on a property on Mare Creek Road when Allen walked toward him and made a “cut throat sign” with his hand.

Despite alleged threats that he would “sic his boys” on him if he continued working, the victim returned to work and saw Allen walk into the woods. About five minutes later, Allen returned with a shotgun, OCSO reported.

Allen reportedly aimed the shotgun at the bulldozer operator and opened fire, shooting three rounds at the victim and the bulldozer. The victim took cover and reported hearing the buckshot hitting the metal of the bulldozer.

Allen ran off, according to the release. Investigators found shell casings and at least 15 impact locations on the bulldozer consistent with being struck by buckshot-style projectiles. The estimated damage to the bulldozer was $10,000 to $15,000.

A deputy spotted a man who matched Allen's description later Tuesday near the Dollar General store on U.S. Highway 90 near State Road 393 east of Crestview. As he went to make contact, the man reportedly threw down a bag of marijuana and ran away. Deputies were unable to find him.

On Wednesday morning, a citizen alerted deputies to the possible location of the suspect at a home on Fawn Lake Road. Deputies found Allen there, along with a weapon that ballistics evidence found was consistent with the shooting scene.

The bulldozer operator also positively identified Allen as the man who shot at him, according to the release.

Allen is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. He was arrested and taken to the Okaloosa County Jail, where he is being held without bond.

Allen faces charges of assault with intent to commit a felony, firing into a vehicle, possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, felony criminal mischief at more than $1,000 and possession of marijuana.
