Five Fort Walton Beach residents charged in stealing safe from Destin home

Five Fort Walton Beach residents were arrested Friday and charged with stealing a safe containing almost $25,000 in valuables, according to a news release from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

About 12:20 a.m. Friday, deputies were notified of a residential burglary at a home on Harbor Lane in Destin.

The victim said the suspects had stolen a safe with coins, jewelry and high-end watches. He also said he had spotted a silver sedan with tinted windows in the area the day of the burglary, as well as on previous days.

The information was quickly broadcast over the radio, and a deputy found two suspects dressed in black running near the crime scene and detained them. A shoe print found at the scene matched one of the suspect’s shoes, the release said.

An OCSO corporal then observed the suspect vehicle fleeing across Okaloosa Island and was able to stop it in Fort Walton Beach. Deputies found the safe, the stolen property and a ski mask inside the car.

Three men in the vehicle, 23-year old Brendon Scarver, 19-year old Cordell Rudolph and 18-year old Nigel Fryer were arrested. The two people who were seen running from the crime scene, 18-year old Savion Reed and a 17-year old, also were taken into custody.

All five people face charges of burglary and grand theft.
