Goats at the governor's mansion: 'Herd immunity' protest draws GOP counter-protesters

A herd of four goats visited the Governor's Mansion during a demonstration facilitated by Santa Rosa Beach attorney Daniel Uhlfelder in protest of the herd immunity approach to COVID-19 and Gov. Ron DeSantis' handling of the pandemic Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020.

Attorney Daniel Uhlfelder, known for dressing up as the grim reaper and visiting Florida beaches after they re-opened during the height of the pandemic, brought another theatrical COVID-19 display to Tallahassee this week.

With the Santa Rosa Beach lawyer dressed as a shepherd with a staff, four goats grazed on the grass in the park across from the Governor's Mansion Wednesday afternoon.

Local doctors Ronald Saff and Howard Kessler and local activist Barbara DeVane joined Uhlfelder in speaking out against Gov. DeSantis and what they called his "disastrous decision to adopt a 'herd immunity' approach to COVID-19." They point to the governor's support of White House adviser Scott Atlas, a former chief of neuroradiology and coronavirus task force member, who has said he wants to reach “herd immunity” through fewer restrictions.

"DeSantis is trying to make Florida the guinea pig for the White House’s grand experiment, evidently fine with sacrificing thousands of Floridians in the process," Uhlfelder said in a press release.

Led by Leon County Republican Party Chair Evan Power, a group of seven counter-protesters arrived to the park just before the goats. They waved Trump-Pence signs and a Blue Lives Matter flag, saying they were there to support the governor and the president.

The two sides remained cordial until the end when DeVane was interrupted by counter-protester Bill Helmich, who yelled over her as she spoke to the press.
