Initial indications were that people on the ground helped the individuals on the airplane to get out.
DESTIN — Emergency officials were called to an area on Planet Drive, which is near the Destin Executive Airport, after a small plane went down on Sunday, according to preliminary reports.
The incident was called in at 10:08 a.m.
A social media post by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office indicated that two men and a yellow Labrador retriever were aboard the plane and all three emerged from the crash "without a scratch."
Initial indications were that people on the ground helped the trio aboard the airplane to get out.
Video from the crash site suggested the plane was a Beechcraft Bonanza general aviation aircraft. The Bonanza is capable of seating six and has been in production longer than any other aircraft in history.
A call to airport officials was not immediately answered.
Beth Cann lives with her husband and two children on Planet Street, about four houses down from where the plane crashed.
Cann said she didn’t hear the crash, but her son Griffin had ridden his bike to the AOC food mart down the street and came back with the news.
"He came back and said, ‘Oh, by the way, there’s an airplane in a tree,’ " Cann said. "He said everybody was fine, there were two guys and a dog, they’re out of the plane."
Cann and other neighbors went to observe the plane and said it was only about 5 feet away from the woman’s house. The woman who lives there was not in the house at the time and came back to find a neighbor bringing a ladder into her backyard to help the two men and the dog escape the plane.
Cann said residents of the area have always worried that such an event would happen because of their close proximity to the airport.
"We’re not in the direct path of the flight landing, but we’ve always said that it’s not a matter of if it’ll happen, but when it’ll happen," she said. "This is a perfect example. … Everyone is extremely lucky."
The Sheriff’s Office said in its post that the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board had been notified of the crash and would oversee the investigation as to the cause.
