In October, the St. Mary School Student Council and Mercy in Motion group sponsored a school-wide service project: Blessing Bags.
Students filled plastic zipper bags with bottled water, socks, personal hygiene items, crackers, lip balm, canned tuna, wipes and more. Students distributed 395 bags to local organizations that serve the homeless and hurricane victims.
On Wednesdays, the school’s Life Runners group runs together and promotes respect for life from conception to natural death.
In St. Mary competition news, the Oct. 18. tropical storm changed the sailing plans for the eighth-grade cardboard boat race, and instead the teams carried their creations in a running race instead of on water.
“This was the 20th year of our boat races, where students must build the boats themselves with only cardboard and tape, focusing on the sea-worthy design and construction,” said Principal Amy T. Akins.
In the dry land race, Naruto Nautical came in first and Tikki Cruiser took the Best Theme prize.
Davidson Middle School Leadership students recently completed their first community services project for the 2019-2020 school year.
The Leadership program teamed up with Elie’s Voice to collect gently used or new books, board games, cards, and DVDs to donate to Children in Crisis. With student body and community donations, the leadership students collected nearly 2,000 items.
Paxton School recognizes eighth-graders who scored level five on the Florida assessment test during their seventh-grade year: Collin Stewart, Zoe Orange, Hunger Lambert, Gracie Geoghagan and Addie Cook.
The school’s National Honor Society inducted new members: Haylee Hayes, Jordyn Bradley, Zach Williams, Cassie Varnum, Mya Young and Holden Mitchell. In addition, the school’s NHS chapter welcomes officers Sadie Varnum, Hailee Bryan, Caylor Dixon and Zachary Wilson.
The Emerald Coast Public Relations Foundation offers a $1,000 scholarship to graduating seniors who will pursue a college degree in the areas of public relations, communication, marketing or journalism.
