CRESTVIEW — A 9-year-old girl was startled awake Saturday morning by firecrackers exploding under her bed.
According to a press release from the Okaloosa County Sheriiff's Office, Crestview's Matthew Morrison, who is 44, sneaked into a residence on Godfrey Street, where he threw firecrackers under the unnamed girl's bed.
Morrison, who was charged with burglary, child cruelty without great harm and possession of a controlled substance, said it was a "prank gone wrong," the release added.
The homeowner, who was unnamed, told deputies that Morrison lived in a tent and entered the house without permission.
Following the "prank," the homeowner chased Morrison out of the home with a stick, the release said.
After being detained, deputies found approximately 2 grams of methamphetamine in Morrison's pocket.
The child told deputies she awoke to the sound of fireworks exploding in her room, causing her to be frightened, cry and shake.
