With Veterans Day falling on a Sunday this year, many area observances take place Monday.
One such Monday event begins at 7:30 a.m. in the Beal Memorial Cemetery, with the Fort Walton Beach High School Air Force JROTC wing providing flag placement and rendering of military honors. The cadets continue their community service tradition by placing more than 1,600 U.S. flags at the final resting place of veterans.
At 11 a.m. the JROTC color guard will present colors to begin a ceremony, and at the conclusion of the morning’s events, the Vikings band plays the final recognition of military service by rendering the trumpet call of "Taps."
The keynote address is presented by Lt. Gen. Brad Webb, commanding general, Air Force Special Operations Command, Hurlburt Field. Also participating is Royal Navy Cmdr. Gregory Smith from Great Britain.
Joining Webb and Smith are U.K. military members who are stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, as well as their families.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, enacted at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The U.S. celebrated Armistice Day until 1957, when the holiday was renamed Veterans Day.
Thank you to all who have served and who are serving.
Continuing with Fort Walton Beach High School news, the school’s robotics team seeks donations of hand and power tools, storage and tool cabinets. The team welcomes programming and construction assistance from anyone who can volunteer.
The team prepares for the FIRST Tech Challenge. FIRST represents For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.
“This is the first year for the re-start of this program at our school,” said Frank Schwandt, team coach and sponsor. “Prior to this year Fort Walton Beach did have a team in FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition), but that was nearly 10 years ago. It is our hope to continue robotics as a permanent club and for it to grow in the future.”
The team’s first competition is Nov. 17.
