CRESTVIEW — A improvised tattooing device powered by a battery from a TV remote started smoking Monday at the Okaloosa County Jail.

The Crestview Fire Department was called out of an "abundance of caution," according to Chief Correctional Officer Stefan Vaughn.

"It was incredibly inconsequential," he said Tuesday morning. "It's kind of the normal grind of the day. Lots of inmates do lots of things that are against the rules."

He said the inmates had been identified and were going through an administrative process to determine what disciplinary action they would face.

He said it was not uncommon for inmates to try to tattoo themselves, but that the individuals involved in the most recent incident weren't quite aware of how such devices go together.
"The other inmates who are not going to have TV are going to be pretty upset with them," he added. "They took something that was a privilege and messed them up."
