CRESTVIEW — The Okaloosa Correctional Institution remains on lockdown nearly a week after two attacks by inmates on correctional officers.

The first incident happened Thursday night and the second happened midday Friday. Both incidents were in the cafeteria.

Rapid response teams were brought in to help “quell the situation” and remained there as of Tuesday, according to Michelle Grady, the director of communications for the Florida Department of Corrections.

About 50 inmates have already been transferred to other facilities in the state, she said.

She said five staff members were injured in the altercations, though most of the injuries were minor. One staff member received what she described as “moderate” injuries.

Grady said last week that the attacks were not related. She also said it was protocol when inmates get violent to transfer them to other facilities.

One of the attacks may have been gang related, she said last week.

All visitation has been cancelled since the attacks.

Grady said as of Tuesday, visitation was still on for this weekend, but that could change.
