CRESTVIEW — The Okaloosa Correctional Institution is on lockdown this weekend after a small group of inmates attacked guards in two different incidents.

The first altercation occurred at about 4 p.m. Thursday when group of inmates confronted guards in the cafeteria of the institution.

“About three or four inmates decided to attack staff,” said Michelle Glady, the director of communication for the Florida Department of Corrections. “No inmates were injured, but three of our guards received minor injuries,”

Another confrontation between guards and inmates occurred around noon Friday in the cafeteria area, where another guard sustained minor injuries.

Glady said the two inmate attacks were not related, but the correctional institution will remain on lockdown with no visitation rights over the weekend.

“Both incidents are under investigation and it will determine if inmates will have to be transferred to other institutions across the state,” she said.

When inmates get violent and attack, the typical protocol is to take them to other correctional facilities.

Glady said they believe Friday’s violent confrontation might have been gang related and staff members from other institutions were called in to assist.

“It’s not unheard of, disturbances like this” she said. “They were not riots, but we do take it very seriously and the team is always prepared for incidents like this.”
