CRESTVIEW — Sen. Greg Evers praised Florida Department of Corrections Sgt. Burt Sellers and Officer George Lee for their response in an accident that could have cost multiple lives.

Tuesday morning, Sellers and Lee were transporting 50 inmates when brakes on their bus malfunctioned while traveling the Interstate 1-10 off-ramp onto Highway 85.

Following the officers’ swift action, lives were saved.

“Though there are difficult times we are navigating as a nation, we must stand with our officers who go above and beyond the call of duty, like Officers Sellers and Lee,” Evers said.

Evers has asked Gov. Rick Scott to officially commend Sellers and Lee and to halt all Department of Corrections bus transportation until the Florida Highway Patrol’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division can inspect buses for safety and compliance.

“The safety of our servicemen and women, inmates in our care, and innocent bystanders should always be a top priority,” Evers said.

“The actions of our government to support our security and safety should always be a priority: Lives are at stake.”
