CRESTVIEW — Bob Sikes Elementary School was placed into a “modified lockdown” mode shortly before opening at 7:30 Tuesday morning.
Okaloosa School District spokesman Henry Kelley said the school’s resource officer heard a police radio report of a “domestic situation” at a home in the general area and secured the school at 7:26 a.m.
“To ensure the safety of our students and staff we went into a modified lockdown,” Principal Vicky Hayden stated in a message sent to parents. “The lockdown was lifted at 7:36 a.m. and we have resumed our regular schedule.”
Kelley said when law enforcement officers determined the domestic disturbance actually occurred about two miles away from the school, the 10-minute modified lockdown was terminated.
“It was absolutely a prudent measure,” Kelley said.
“Campus safety is a top priority,” Hayden stated in her message.
