BAKER — It doesn’t take long for Baker School football coach Matt Brunson to get fired up at the thought of playing Jay in Friday’s Kickoff Classic.
The Gators will head across Highway 4 to Jay to take on the Royals in the 7 p.m. game and Brunson is ready to tee it up.
“Our guys have put in three hard weeks of work and we are ready to line up against somebody,” Brunson said. “It always adds some incentive when you are playing Jay. Their guys will be excited and get after us, and we will be excited and get after them.
“Our guys are hungry for victory. With our guys, you don’t have to get their attention, although it is a classic, and it doesn’t count on your record because we are playing Jay. They are trying to end the little streak of success we’ve had, and as Baker Gators, we would like to keep that success going.”
The game’s format will feature junior varsity teams in the first quarter, the varsity backups in the second quarter and the starters in the third and fourth quarters.
Brunson likes the format, which gives everyone a chance to play.
“It gives us a pretty good measuring stick in a game situation against a pretty good team as to where we are and some things we need to work on before we play week one,” he said. “We open here against Graceville, and they are going to be very tough.
“We are going to be very vanilla and not do a whole lot. But our guys, any time they keep score, we take it serious.”
Brunson hopes the Gators can build on the success they had in the spring game against Chipley.
“I hope I’ll be surprised at how well we play,” he said. “I think we did a great job in the spring in what we tried to accomplish and what we went over to Chipley and were able to do.
“I hope we can keep that momentum going and carry it to week one against Graceville.”
