Crestview soccer team falls to Tate in region quarterfinals

The Crestview boys soccer team's historic run came to an end Friday.

Tate continued its march through the postseason with a dominating 5-0 shutout of the Bulldogs in the Region 1-5A quarterfinals.

The Bulldogs were playing in their first-ever regional game.

With Crestview playing it safe for most of the first half, Tate’s David Rice scored the first goal of the game and the Aggies held a 1-0 at halftime.

“They play more of a defensive game,” Tate coach James McHenry said. “I told the team at halftime, ‘We got to play the ball out wide. If we can spread them out and use our wits, we’ll be alright.’ ”

With the win, the Aggies will now host Niceville at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Region 1-5A semifinals. Tate fell to Niceville in their first meeting of the 2010 season, but battled them to a tie in their second meeting.

On Tuesday the Aggies will face Niceville without senior Sam Hardy, who broke his tibia with four minutes left to go in the first half of Friday’s game.
