CHS coaches look on during a summer scrimmage for the Bulldogs.

UPCOMING: CHS football pleased with summer progress

The numbers couldn’t have been much better for the Crestview football team as the Bulldogs started summer workouts a couple of weeks ago.

“We had about 135 kids the first couple of days,” Dawg coach Matt Brunson said. “They’ve come back hungry to go to work, and our goal is to ultimately make the playoffs and get out of the first round.”

There are strong numbers in every class. The Bulldogs have 32 seniors listed on the summer roster, 28 juniors, 33 sophomores and 40 freshmen.

Brunson smiles as he thinks about all the experience he has on the squad.

“We’ve got a bunch of starters coming back,” he said. “Our senior class was a great group as freshmen and then had a great JV year (as sophomores) and have been the playoffs — some of them (two of the last three year) — and now they will be seniors.

“We’ve got a bunch of experience in this senior class, and it’s a big senior class. Last year we had a dozen seniors and this year we have 32.”

Having 60 upperclassmen around makes things easier for the Bulldog coaches.

“They (the players) know the drill and all we have to do is give them a little guidance,” Brunson said. “These guys work hard and you can look at them and tell they’ve been working in the weight room.

“We’ve got a great group to work with.”
