The Okaloosa Lions Special Olympics basketball team, which earned a gold award in the Special Olympics State Basketball Games in February, was recognized at the March 10 School Board meeting.

The team — coached by Heather Carmical, Otto Rosero-Garces, and Leigh Rose — comprises Richbourg School students. Team Members are Jacob Luttrell, Colby Thames, Cierra LeDuc, Leslie Chase and Lester Rivers. Haley Stanton and Alyssa Whitehead couldn't attend the state games.

Carmical praised the Lions' efforts.

“This was their first year as a team and they have come a long way since their first practice in late October,” she said. “We also had an Individual Skills Competitor, Andrew Williams, compete and he brought home the silver medal in his division.

"Richbourg School, parents, coaches and numerous supporters are incredibly proud of these students."
