CHS football: Former FSU greats expected at youth camp

A pair of former Florida State greats will be back in town Aug. 1 and 2 for Crestview High School’s Camp 80 football camp.

Both Tamarick Vanover (a member of FSU’s 1993 national championship team) and Ron Dugans (who earned a national championship ring in 1999) wore number 80 during their days in Tallahassee.

Both players went on to play in the National Football League and are now coaches – Vanover at Lake City Christian Academy and Dugans at Georgia Southern University.

This will be the CHS football program’s sixth annual football camp under the direction of coach Matt Brunson, who is preparing for his eighth season overall.

Vanover and Dugans also appeared at the CHS camp last year.

The camp is open for players in kindergarten through seniors in high school.

The K-6 will go from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Grades 7-12 will go from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Cost of the camp is $60 if pre-registered before July 29 and $70 on the day of the camp. Registration fee includes lunch each day, camp T-shirts and autographed football cards from Dugans and Vanover.

Pre-registration is being held at the Sports Locker in the Winn-Dixie Plaza just north of CHS.

“We are going to teach guys how to stretch and how to run,” Brunson said. “We will teach the proper techniques in tackling, blocking and handling the football.

“Obviously we can’t do full contact because we don’t have gear on. But we will do as much as we can without gear.”

Brunson emphasized all aspects of football will be covered, including the kicking game and long snapping.

“I think the kids each year take a lot from it,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of repeat guys every year.

“We invite everybody to come out.”

Vanover and Dugans also will join the CHS coaching staff as it takes on the CHS varsity basketball team in a celebrity basketball game Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. Admission is $3 for campers and $5 for general public.
