Twenty-two years have passed since Joey Rankin’s Fort Walton Beach football team hoisted a state title.

The championship was the area's ninth on the gridiron in a 13-season stretch from 1983-1995. It's also the last for the Daily News' coverage area entering 2017.

Sure, near misses with Niceville, Baker and Crestview have since followed. Navarre and Choctaw too have made Final Four trips, and Rocky Bayou's North Florida Football Conference titles in 2014 and 2015 serve as consolation.

But the football pollsters are keen on championships and Final Four trips. The preseason polls released this week reflect that.

Baker and Navarre, both Final Four qualifiers from a year ago, were the lone teams to crack the rankings of USA Today, MaxPreps and FloridaHSFootball.com.

The Raiders enter the season fresh off a 12-2 campaign that ended with a 35-14 loss to state runner-up Lake Gibson. It was the fifth straight playoff trip under head coach Jay Walls, who during his tenure is 8-5 in the playoffs and has led the Raiders to two Final Fours.

Despite losing UNC running back Michael Carter and defensive playmakers like Xavier Fernandez, Bo Hering, Lee Jones and Aaron Mitchell, Navarre is ranked ninth in 6A by USA Today and sixth by FloridaHSFootball.com, which also put the Raiders 20th on the Top 25 list covering all classes. The Raiders open at home against Pensacola Catholic Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Baker, meanwhile, was on every list following last year's 14-0 campaign. Sure, the Gators lost several key starters on defense, but they return quarterback Kalee Ciurleo and 1,000-yard backs Jalen Ciurleo and Junior McLaughlin.

The Gators are ranked No. 2 by FloridaHSFootball.com, No. 3 by MaxPreps and fourth by USA Today. They open the season at Holmes County Friday night at 7.

Niceville, which has made 16 straight postseason trips, was the only other team that drew mention following last year's 8-3 campaign. The Eagles were "on the bubble" on the 6A ranks for FloridaHSFootball.com.
