Well it finally happened. I've written two other letters to the editor in the past reference to the lack of sidewalks on Stillwell Boulevard and Valley Road in Crestview and they have fallen on deaf ears. Now we have a young man who’s confined to a wheelchair who was struck by a vehicle while he was trying to get home. The person that hit him just left him and failed to stop, not caring if he was severely injured or dead.
A sidewalk was recently put in on Long Drive which doesn’t have near the traffic nor hazards that Stillwell Boulevard and Valley Road do. These two roads are two of the most dangerous in the county and now someone was nearly killed. Daily you see cars have to swerve into the opposite lane of traffic to avoid hitting children, or the children have to walk in thick grass and brush to avoid traffic, taking the chance of getting bit by a snake.
I don’t want to see a child lying in the roadway as a result of this. What part of “liable” don’t the local governments understand? Even a 3-foot pedestrian/bicycle expansion added onto the side of the existing roadway would be better than nothing at all.
