Child accidentally shot

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. (AP) — A 7-year-old boy was accidentally shot in southwest Florida.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reports that the boy was sitting next to his stepfather, 24-year-old Wayne Harold Wheeler, who was cleaning a gun at a Lehigh Acres home Monday night when the child was shot in the torso. Authorities say the child was conscious and breathing before being taken to the hospital by helicopter.

The injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. No charges have been filed.
