Body of missing woman found in lake 12 years later
PLANTATION, Fla. (AP) — The body of a Broward County woman missing for 12 years has been found — at the bottom of a lake near her home.
Plantation police said Friday that Gail Schoening’s body was found inside her car only about 100 yards from her front door.
Police said several bodies of water were searched her disappearance in 1997, but there wasn’t the proper technology at the time to help deal with poor visibility.
In July, police reopened the case and used more advanced equipment to search the water around her apartment. The body was found on Aug. 18. Police said divers had searched that lake before.
An investigation showed Schoening drove through a narrow space and went into the water. The car flipped upside-down before landing at the bottom of the lake. She was 35.
