Powwow in the running for Pepsi Refresh Project
NICEVILLE — The Thunderbird Intertribal Council is in the running for a $5,000 grant from Pepsi. The money will be used to fund this year’s Thunderbird Intertribal Powwow at the Mullet Festival fairgrounds.
For one month, the Pepsi Refresh Project offered more than $1 million to groups along the Gulf of Mexico that were affected by the BP oil spill.
With just two days of voting left, the Thunderbird Intertribal Powwow is tenth on the list of organizations.
The list of more than 200 ideas includes everything from fieldtrips to accounting services.Local events like the Destin Arts Festival and Little Black Dress Party fundraiser are competing for larger grants.
Pepsi's “Do Good for the Gulf” contest will award $5,000 to the top 10.
With tourism down, Kirby Locklear, vice chairman of the Thunderbird Tribal Council and leader of the Thunderbird Color Guard, said attendance for November’s three-day festival will be low. If won, the grant will go a long way, paying to bring dancers and drummers to the powwow.
