PONCE DE LEON — A 64-year-old man was killed Thursday evening after over-correcting his vehicle on County Road 181-C.
Charles Bruce Johnson of Ponce de Leon was driving a 2004 GMC Envoy east near Nancy Darby Road around 7:40 p.m. when he drifted on the southern shoulder as he entered the northerly curve.
A second vehicle, a 2006 Chevy Suburban, was driving west on CR 181-C entering the same curve from the opposite direction, according to the Florida Highway Patrol press release.
Johnson over-corrected his vehicle in an apparent attempt to avoid a crash, but the quick movement caused his vehicle to rotate counterclockwise and drive into the westbound lane.
The front of Johnson’s vehicle hit the driver’s side of the Suburban driven by 35-year-old Crestview resident Douglas Alan Sanders, the release said.
The force of the impact caused Sanders’ vehicle to roll over on its roof where it came to a final rest upside down facing west on the northern shoulder of CR 181-C.
Johnson’s vehicle came to a final rest upright, on the northern shoulder along the westbound lane of CR 181-C, facing northwest. The wreck caused $25,000 in damages to both vehicles.
Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
Sanders and his passenger, 38-year-old Sonny Wayne Smith of Jacksonville, were taken to Bay Medical Center with serious injuries.
No charges will be filed, the release said.
