Folks who wish the fun and festive spirit of the annual downtown Homecoming Parade wouldn’t abruptly end when the marchers reach the north end of Main Street will have their wish fulfilled this Friday afternoon.
The Okaloosa Arts Alliance-North committee and the Main Street Crestview Association have teamed up once again to present their last Music & Art on Main Street festival of the year immediately following the Homecoming Parade.
Then march on over to the gazebo in front of the courthouse for a few hours of great music and great art.
Courthouse Terrace, the street in front of the gazebo, will be blocked off for merry-makers enjoying the sounds of Walker Sherman & Friends, the Cook Karaoke group — which lets the audience become part of the entertainment — and other local talent. Meanwhile, local visual artists will exhibit everything from paintings and photography to textile art, jewelry and sculpture.
“Oh, it’s going to be fun!” assured Viola Owens, manager at Hart Printing, one of the event organizers.
Enjoy a great meal at any of the many and diverse downtown eateries while you’re there, then head on over to the big Homecoming game at Jack Foster Stadium when the Bulldogs take on the West Gadsden High School Panthers with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
This is the first year the local committee of the county’s official arts organization has presented the summer arts and music series. Local artists have praised the informality of the events, while attendees have welcomed the opportunity for the monthly Friday night diversions.
Downtown merchants, too, have seen an increase in patrons for their shops and restaurants during the festivals, while others welcome the increase focus on the city’s historic heart.
OAA-N chairwoman Rae Schwartz said that next summer, the plan is for the Music & Art on Main Street festivals to occur once a month beginning in June and lasting through August.
For Friday’s festival, artists and performers are encouraged to wear their Crestview red-and-white. Exhibit space is available. There is no registration charge, but artists must bring their own tables, chairs, pop-up shelters or other exhibit materials. Set-ups will commence around 2:30 p.m., shortly before the start of the 3 p.m. parade. Art lovers are encouraged to bring camp chairs in which to sit and enjoy the music.
For information about participating in Friday’s Music & Art on Main Street, contact Viola Owens at 683-5252, heartprinting @hotmail.com, or Rae Schwartz, 585-5672, bakerny@yahoo.com.
