Up on the Hill: Honoring the Citizen of the Year
It was a beautiful evening as Sybil Harrison spoke in her gentle voice to officials and friends in the Laurel Hill council chambers May 8. She expressed graceful acceptance for the plaque and honor given posthumously to her husband, John Harrison.
Council Chairman Vizell Robbins spoke from his heart of days spent as a boy in the presence of a young John Harrison, continuing into later years hearing words from a wise older man. Pastor McVay expressed his appreciation of one of his church members and neighbors. Mayor
Dunn presented a plaque to Sybil with encouragement to use the key to the city at anytime. She said the children would appreciate the plaque and she wished John could be present to respond.

• Neighbors in Laurel Hill live a quiet, peaceful life beyond the public scenes of the council chambers, where freedom of speech is a privilege.
The report of city clerk, Barbara Foley, revealed the savings of several thousand dollars in the tax department. She was praised by the mayor and city manager and applauded by those attending the meeting.
• The search for a council member replacement continues in the small-town fashion of wishing and speaking out. Thankfully, there are people on board in a race to see Laurel Hill grow and prosper. Laurel Hill is an unbeatable place to live amidst a noisy world in turmoil. Citizens strive for peace in individual ways.
• We enjoy the country rides to Akers of Strawberries in Baker for homemade shortcake beneath scoops of strawberry yogurt and fresh picked strawberries!
The picnic benches have been replaced with comfortable tables and chairs to sit and relax while enjoying the sweet berries and yogurt. You may choose a labor of love by picking your berries or shop from the crated berries at the counter. The trip is always a sweet time.
• Fred and Roma Lee Henderson are tilling the old home place soil. Fred worked in his father’s garden in about the same spot that he tills in 2008. The turnip and mustard patch is producing, and later he will have the best of every vegetable growing and producing. What an amazing man! When we hear the sound of his lawn mower and other equipment, we know Fred is having a good day.
• Brides-to-be shopping for wedding dresses must check out My Sister’s Closet consignment shop in Kellie’s Plaza, across from Moulton’s Pharmacy. You will find new wedding dresses at half price. • Hilltoppers will gather at the Laurel Hill Grill on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Local ladies are invited to attend this dutch treat lunch and bring a friend for a time of fellowship. No admission fee, no rules or regulations here. The only serious requirement is a Laurel Hill smile and happy attitude.
