Fire destroys Laurel Hill home

A home on Campton Lane in Laurel Hill was destroyed by fire late Wednesday night, according to Almarante Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Henderson.

“It was a total loss,” he said of the fire that was called in by a neighbor just before 10 p.m. “When our first units got on scene the roof was already caved in.”

He said the house had been built in the 1930s. The couple that was living there at the time was out to dinner.

Henderson said that fire crews had no way of knowing initially if someone was trapped inside. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office helped them track down the residents.

Crews left the scene around 2 a.m., but returned at 6 to deal with hot spots that had flared up.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
