NICEVILLE — Distinguished Young Women of Okaloosa County, previously the Junior Miss, is accepting applications for its second annual competition through March 1.

Young women must be in their junior year of high school and live in Okaloosa County to be eligible.

Contestants will participate in a variety of games and events in addition to practices leading up to the show.

Out-of-state judges will evaluate the women based how they perform in the categories of interview, fitness, talent, grades and self-expression.

The winner and alternates will receive cash scholarships.

Each category's top scorer and the Spirit Award winner also will receive prizes.

The Okaloosa County winner will advance to the state competition; all state competitors then move to the national competition in Mobile, Ala.

Arden Robertson, last year’s winner, appeared in three Christmas parades and six other events. She also participated in the state competition in Winter Garden, where she received scholarship money for the Spirit Award and as a Scholastic Award runner-up.

The program last summer awarded more than $10,000 in cash and $203,000 in college scholarships.
