Church coffee shop supports missions abroad

The First Assembly of God’s music pastor, Jason Hall, does more than assure music rings the rafters of the South Ferdon Boulevard church.

He also makes sure the java’s flowing.

Pastor Hall oversees the church’s Extreme Bean coffee shop.

“It’s one of my many jobs,” he chuckled. “I’m glad to take on the project.”

The Extreme Bean, located in the front of the church, opened June 29 as part of the church’s Independence Day celebration. Even though its hours currently are limited, the coffee shop has begun to attract a following.

That’s good news for the beneficiaries of the congregation’s mission work.

“We support missions in general,” Pastor Hall said. “We support several different countries from Africa to South America, Europe and a bunch of different places.”

The coffee shop, regulated as a retail bakery, chooses vendors, such as Saints Coffee that can support its mission.

“When you buy a one-pound bag of coffee from Saints Coffee, it feeds a child for a week,” Hall said.

Under newly-appointed manager Dorianne Bauza, the church plans to expand the Extreme Bean’s hours. Currently it is open Friday and Saturday evenings, and before services on Wednesdays and Sundays.

“We’re just getting the buzz out and starting to generate customers,” Pastor Hall said. “The goal would definitely be to open daily.”

The Extreme Bean is open to public, Hall said.

You don’t need to be a member of church” to enjoy the shop’s menu of frappes, smoothies, iced coffee and more.

“It’s just like any other coffee shop. It just is in our building,” he added.

Because the Extreme Bean doesn’t have to pay rent or a mortgage, Hall said it is able to offer its products cheaper than other coffee shops.

The shop’s freshly brewed coffees come in several varieties, including some from Ethiopia.

“Which is the world’s best,” Pastor Hall declared of the Ethiopian coffee. “It’s where coffee originated.

“We also typically have fresh homemade pastries as well,” he said. “We don’t have automatic stuff. We pretty much do everything by hand. I think that makes it a little different, and we can adjust drinks to customers’ tastes that way.”

The shop also features free WiFi, so feel free to pull up a chair, get a java and open your laptop, Pastor Hall encouraged.

“The money you spend isn’t going to make somebody rich,” Pastor Hall said. “It goes to help people.”

I checked out the Extreme Bean last weekend and had no trouble at all ordering a decaf iced coffee drink. I also noticed they make decaf smoothies. I also noticed their prices are ALOT cheaper than the national chains down the street. And I noticed the profits from the money I spent help those in need. To sum up, I had a great evening, met nice people, didn't put any addictive chemicals into my body, and helped overseas missions. Poor Dr. Marcus seems to have spent HIS time just sitting around being bitter and not helping anyone, including himself.

Coffee contains caffeine, which is a bitter white crystalline xanthine alkaloid that acts as a psychoactive stimulant drug and a mild diuretic in humans and other animals. It is amazing that our churches are turning towards peddling these addictive substances to adults and children alike in order to pad their pockets. It is also a cheap trick to try and convince people to rationalize that by buying coffee and supporting their habit that they are helping feed impoverished children. Caffeine is an addictive drug, affecting 90 percent of all Americans, which alters the brain's natural state, and stimulates it in a manner similar to the amphetamines cocaine and heroin. Quitting coffee can cause withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, sleepiness and irritability. The acidic nature of coffee can lead to stomach ulcers. When the excess acid enters the bloodstream, it also increases calcium loss in urine. The mechanisms employed by caffeine, cocaine, and heroin, are to close blood vessels in the brain, so the brain and body cannot sleep, to cause the release of adrenaline into the body, so the body remains active and alert, and to manipulate dopamine production in the brain, so the person experiences a temporary high. Evidence shows that it may be linked to male infertility and also birth defects by passing through the placenta. Caffeine can cause abnormally fast, abnormally slow and irregular heart beats. It also wreaks havoc on blood pressure, commonly producing hypertension. Coffee has been linked to heart disease, pancreas and bladder cancer, and hypoglycemia. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant, providing that familiar kick on which we have come to depend. But as with all stimulants, there is a price to be paid. If you run the body on overdrive for an extended period of time by artificially stimulating the adrenals, expect breakdown to occur.

I think this is great! it gives our community another choice. And for the record they help many, many locals with food everyweek, a place to stay, foster kids, angel tree, bus fares, so double check before you put them down. Great job First Assembly!

I think this is a great venture. This church also does a lot locally. Mega church means mega people knowing the Lord when done with the right heart-which I know this church has.

Looks like the start of another mega church. This really wouldn't be so bad if it was being used to take care of our own right here in America but I guess they never heard the saying Charity begins at home, but should not end there. Must be worth more brownie points to just skip home and go right to there.
