Tropical Storm Fay: Authorities issue advisory

As of 11 a.m. Friday, the national Hurricane Center’s tracking map of Tropical Storm Fay indicates it will hit our area about 7 p.m. Saturday.

Yesterday workers at Eglin Air Force Base received an advisory from the base weather squadron that said, “expect showers and thunderstorms to begin on Friday evening with an increase in rainfall on Saturday and Sunday, and accumulations of several inches through the weekend.”

The advisory said to be alert for windy conditions, with highest sustained winds expected between 23 and 29 mph. Gusts may reach 40 mph Saturday and into Sunday, the advisory stated.

An advisory issued Thursday afternoon by Okaloosa County authorities said, “At this time Fay is not anticipated to increase above Tropical Storm status, however as a slow moving storm we are anticipating and are planning for unprecedented rainfall.”

To help mitigate flooding in flood-prone areas, the advisory said, “use good judgment with regards to placing yard waste and household garbage out for collection. As in Central Florida, we anticipate that some roads will be flooded during and immediately after the storm passes through our area. Yard waste can easily be blown around and end up in storm drains, increasing the possibility of flooding.”

The advisory also said Waste Management requested that residents “not place their cart and cans out on Monday unless the storm has passed and it is safe to do so. At this time we are anticipating running the Friday and Saturday routes, however it has not been determined if we will be able to operate on Monday.”

By drastic, I was referring to the 10-15 inches of rain we were EXPECTED to get. As for the tornado, the only reported tornado the entire area was in Dale County, AL. That is in the National Weather Service of Tallahassee coverage area. The only reported tornado in NWS Mobile coverage area was in Mississippi.

But I think you got your info for today wrong. Forecast for 1 to 2 inches today and another 1 to 2 inches tonight sounds kind of drastic to me. Not to mention the tornado north of Mossy Head this morning

Well the treat of major rain went well to the north of the area, because Fay stayed on a more northerly track, instead of huging the coast. At this point the rivers will be up, but will not reach flood stage. Today and through the next few days we may see some thunderstorms associated with Fay, but don't expect anything drastic rainfall wise.

Its a little early to know for sure but residents that live along the Yellow and Shoal Rivers should PREPARE for flooding. Recent models suggest that the Shoal River will crest at around 15 feet on Monday morning which will flood many of the low lying areas along Travis Court and a few areas along Rattlesnake Bluff Road and along some low lying areas near the Okaloosa County Correctional Facility. This will reach major flood stage according to the National Weather Service. The Yellow River is expected to reach 14. 8 feet which is just below moderate flood stage according to the National Weather Service. This will flood homes on Ellis and Antioch Roads and will flood Antioch Road. A few homes in Old Milligan will also be flooded.

I despise these things. For the simple fact, they are way too wishy-washy. We never really know, until it is over.
