William J. Reed

A Destin man convicted of killing a transient in a local park in June of 2017 has been sentenced to life in prison.

William J. Reed pleaded no contest to the second-degree murder charge, according to a press release from the State Attorney for the First Judicial Circuit.

The charge arose from the June 30, 2017 shooting death of Robert Nicholas Mayall at Harbor View Park in Destin. Both men had gone to the park together around 10 p.m. While there, Reed shot Mayall several times. Mayall was found the next day.

Reed made an attempt to change his appearance after the crime, according to news accounts. But when confronted, he confessed to shooting the other man "in cold blood" and leaving.

The murder weapon was found buried behind a Destin business.

The case was investigated by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. The sentence was imposed by Circuit Judge William Stone.
