FORT WALTON BEACH — More than 100 shoppers packed the storefront of Five Below at Uptown Station on Friday morning, hoping to score free prizes before the discount store's grand opening.

Jacqueline Taormina, the fourth person in line at Five Below, received a free tote bag and scratch-off $1 gift card for being one of the first 100 people to show up for the event. The scratch-off cards passed out to those in line ranged in value from $1 to $100.

"I came out here for the free stuff," Taormina said. "I've never been here, but I was curious to see what it was like."

The Fort Walton Beach Five Below, which is popular for its $1 to $5 prices for all products, was stocked full of toys, electronics, workout gear, clothes, makeup and more.

Steve Szymczak, a store manager in Jacksonville who came to Fort Walton Beach for the grand opening, said Friday's event was all about having fun and exploring the new store.

"I think it's exciting for people to have this new store here in Fort Walton Beach," Szymczak said.

"The people who know about Five Below are coming back to us, and the people who don't know about it are coming to check us out," added Brad Odom, the Fort Walton Beach store manager.

Odom said some of the popular items likely will be footballs, basketballs, boogie boards, phone chargers and cases.

Patrick Rosser, one of the more enthusiastic customers Friday, said he thought the new Five Below was amazing.

"I'm so excited," he said. "This is a great store. I really love everything that's in here. I'm going to be back."

Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
