Northwest Florida breaks world records
When a boat from Sandestin grabbed the title of largest bluefin tuna ever recorded in Florida waters last month (826-pounds, 8-ounces) it got us thinking about other claims to fame in Northwest Florida.
We contacted our friends over at Guinness World Records and here is what they had to say:
Largest mural of a flag
The largest mural of a flag measures 166,834.8 feet-squared and was created by the artist Wyland in April of 2016. That mural is on the roof-top of the Legendary Marine building at 4601 Legendary Marina Drive in Destin.
Greatest distance run on sand in 24 hours
The greatest distance run on sand in 24 hours is 134 miles and was achieved by Joe Fejes (USA) in Destin between Feb. 16-17, 2013.
Fastest jet-powered fire truck
The world's fastest fire truck is the jet-powered Hawaiian Eagle, owned by Shannen Seydel of Navarre. The fire truck attained the speed of 407 miles per hour in Ontario, Canada, on July 11, 1998. The truck is a red 1940 Ford, powered by two Rolls Royce Bristol Viper engines boasting 6,000 horse-power per engine generating 12,000 pounds of thrust.
Largest artificial reef
The U.S. Navy's attack aircraft carrier USS Oriskany ("Mighty O") was decommissioned in 1976 after a long, illustrious service, and was scheduled for scrapping until it was decided to be sunk as an artificial reef in the Gulf of Mexico, 24 miles off Pensacola.
The ship was finally sunk on May 17, 2006, thanks to 500 pounds of C4 explosives, taking just 37 minutes to reach the sea bed. At 150 feet tall and 888 feet long, it is the largest artificial reef in the world, attracting an abundance of marine life rarely seen in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
