HOLT – A 36-year-old woman was charged with felony child neglect after a child in her care was found more than 1 mile from her home on U.S. Highway 90.
The child, who was barefoot and topless, had crossed an overpass for Interstate 10, according to the woman’s Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
A passing motorist stopped and held the child for law enforcement.
Authorities searched for the child’s parents for nearly three hours, but no one reported her missing.
When contact was made with the suspect, she said she didn’t know where the child was.
She told deputies she’d allowed the child to walk to a neighbor’s house that was just 100 yards away but hadn’t confirmed that the child arrived. She would not have been able to see the neighbor’s house due to a large stand of trees, the deputy noted.
Her version of events kept changing.
