PAXTON — A structure fire in Paxton led to the rescue of five family pets by Walton County Fire Rescue and Florala Fire Department.

Just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, firefighters and Walton County sheriff's deputies were called to a residence on State Line Road in reference to a small fire. No residents were home at the time of the fire, according to WCFR Public Information Officer Lindsey Batchelor.

After entering the residence, the firefighters found the first four dogs almost immediately and began giving them oxygen. The fifth dog was found a short time after. Batchelor said they are still alive, but are being given medical attention.

The owners of the home were contacted and on their way to the scene as of 1:50 p.m. Firefighters say they believe the fire was electrical and started in a bedroom.

The bedroom received serious damage, Batchelor said, but doubted the house was a total loss.
