SANTA ROSA BEACH — A Crestview man who attacked a person gardening in his front yard before fleeing naked into Choctawhatchee Bay has been arrested.
John Kyle Botelho, 26, is charged with resisting an officer with violence, aggravated battery on a person using a deadly weapon and battery on a law enforcement officer for the March 31 attack.
According to a press release from the Walton County Sheriff's Office, the victim was working in his front yard when Botelho punched him in the nose, kneed him in the chest and then wrestled the gardening shears out of his hands.
Botelho began beating and stabbing the victim with the shears, knocking out his teeth and causing multiple lacerations to his head that required 20 staples to close, according to Botelho's arrest report.
The victim said he didn't know who Botelho was and had never seen him before.
The suspect only stopped when a bystander stepped in and attempted to take the gardening shears out of his hands.
The suspect then fled the scene and was later found naked in the bay, a short distance away from the victim’s East Mitchell Avenue house.
It took four deputies to retrieve him from the water. He balled up his fists and physically fought the deputies, his arrest report said. He pushed, pulled, wrestled and, at one point, tried to pull a deputy underwater.
He initially refused to give his name but was identified, the report said.
