CRESTVIEW — Okaloosa County sheriff's deputies found a man and woman passed out in a truck at a gas pump Monday in Crestview while a 3-year-old child had syringes, methamphetamine and oxycodone within easy reach.

Amanda Hatton, 23, of Holt, and Jared Smith, 31, of Baker, are charged with child neglect, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies woke and detained Hatton and Smith at the Tom Thumb store at 1992 James Lee Blvd. W. They had listed the vehicle as “Attempt to Identify” in reference to a theft about 10:30 p.m.

According to the release, the couple arrived at the gas station about 8:45 p.m. The child was unsupervised for about two hours with potential access to the drugs.
