CRESTVIEW — Firefighters responded to a "big blaze" at an empty home in Crestview over the weekend.

According to Crestview Fire Department spokesman Corey Winkler, crews responded to a fully involved structure fire at 3129 East Chestnut Ave. on Saturday night at around 5:30. No people or animals were inside the home when the fire broke out.

The east end of Chestnut Avenue was temporarily blocked off as crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but Winkler said the fire appeared to have started in the garage before moving to the living room. The house appeared "pretty dilapidated" and had no running water or power, and trees were growing throughout the house.

Firefighters speculated that vagrants may have been cooking in the home, but that is not confirmed. The North Okaloosa Fire Department is currently conducting an investigation.

In addition to North Okaloosa and the Crestview Fire Departments, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office and Okaloosa County EMS were also on scene to assist.

The home was a total loss.
