GROVE HILL - The Pickens Academy boys basketball team defeated South Choctaw, 57-40, on Saturday to claim the AISA Class AA, Region 2 championship and earn a birth into the state championships’ Elite Eight.

The win also keeps the Pirates undefeated at 17-0 as they head to Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl where they await their opponent for Wednesday’s 4:30 p.m. game.

Pickens Academy’s Lee Acker was named the region tournament’s MVP. He scored 17 points in the championship game. Joining him on the all-tournament team were his teammates, Austin Goodman who led the Pirates’ scoring in the final with 18 points, and Hamner Allen.

Sipsey Valley 44

COTTONDALE - The Stampede's home win found Marcus Bates leading all scorers with 19 points. Keshon Lockhart scored 11 points and Jared Sherfield 10.

Sipsey Valley had co-scoring leaders in Tyrin Lanier and Dakari Smith who both scored 12 points.

Bryant (21-4) will host Northridge on Monday.

 

Sumter Central 70,

Central 47

YORK - Calvin Finch scored 16 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in Sumter Central's home win. Jacorey Turnipseed and Desmond Ward both scored 14 points, and Tyler Presswood scored 12.

David Brown's 15 points led Central. It was an AHSAA Class 5A, Area 7 game.

Sumter Central ended its regular season with a 24-4 record and now awaits its next opponent, which is to be determined, in the AHSAA Class 5A, Area 7 tournament.

 

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Paul W. Bryant 44,

Sipsey Valley 40

COTTONDALE – Ieisha Merida led the Stampede’s home win with 18 points, Jakina Hines had 12 and Myia Anderson 10.

Leading Sipsey Valley with 18 points was Taylor Smith.

Bryant (5-10) hosts Northridge on Monday.

 

South Choctaw Academy 55,

GROVE HILL - South Choctaw Academy took the AISA, Class AA, Region 2 championship with the win. Pickens Academy, 13-5, still advances to this week's girls' Elite Eight which will be played at the Multiplex in Montgomery.

Pickens Academy struggled in the first half, trailing 42-18 at one point. Its scoring and rebounding leader was Olivia Lewis who had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jessi Latham scored eight points.

 

Sumter Central 38,

Central 32

YORK - Kia Dent scored 15 points and Chardai Watkins 13 for home-hosting Sumter Central in the AHSAA Class 5A, Area 7 game.

Central's top scorers were Conajah Jones with nine points and both Quintasia Leatherwood and Shakyia White with eight points. White also had 10 rebounds.

Central (19-6, 2-1) plays at Demopolis on Monday.
