BAKER — The victims of a murder-suicide in north Okaloosa County have been tentatively identified as a married couple in their mid-60s.
According to a press release from Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, the Medical Examiner’s Office tentatively identified the victims as William and Gretchen Rust, both 64 years old.
Investigators believe William shot his wife, then himself, at their home at 2121 Winners Circle near Baker on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.
The bodies were discovered by a family member about 1:40 p.m. Monday. They were last seen alive Sunday in the late afternoon hours.
Family members told authorities William had been diagnosed with a medical condition that led to deteriorating mental capabilities and bouts of anger.
Deputies were called to the Winners Circle residence Monday after a family member discovered the bodies. The couple reportedly had been arguing the previous day, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The call originally came in as a suicide, according to the call history report. The family member who found the bodies told the dispatcher they were both dead and was directed to “back out of the house,” the report said.
A chaplain was asked to respond to the scene and help family members.
