DESTIN — The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a man's body was found in a retention pond behind an apartment complex.
According to Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Michele Nicholson, the body of 40-year-old Adam Vaughn of Laurel Hill was found Friday morning floating facedown in the pond behind Venue Emerald Coast, a luxury apartment complex at 4231 Commons Drive West in Destin. A resident called the Sheriff's Office about 7 a.m. after spotting something in the pond from his balcony.
Vaughn, who was mentally challenged, had been reported missing about 10:30 p.m. Thursday by a caretaker at his group home. The caretaker said Vaughn had gone to the restroom at Morgan’s Sports Complex, about half a mile from the apartment complex where his body was later found, but did not return.
The caretaker also said Vaughn could not drive or read, and didn't know his address.
Investigators said there were no initial indications of foul play. The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Investigators and divers were at the pond throughout Friday morning at the otherwise quiet apartment complex. Yellow police tape cordoned off a pool area at the back of the complex that overlooked the large pond, which is surrounded by woods.
Two Sheriff's Office divers entered the water to recover the body about 10:30 a.m.
Debra Joyce, who said she and her husband have lived at the apartment complex for about four years, said she was shocked to see law officers there Friday morning.
"It's strange because nothing like that really happens here," Joyce said. "We've never had any issues. We like it here. We've been here since they (Venue Emerald Coast) opened. It's just strange to see something like this."
