CRESTVIEW — An inmate who goes by the street name “Bonkers” was arrested after beating a fellow inmate because he was “tired of racial slurs.”

According to an arrest report from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the 35-year-old man, who had been convicted of battery on five previous occasions, came up behind another inmate and pushed him into the cell bars before hitting him several times in the head.

The victim received a gash in his head that took 15 staples to close. He was transported to North Okaloosa Medical Center for his injuries.

When questioned, the man admitted to punching the other man several times and said he did it “because he was tired of the racial slurs (from the inmate).”

He was charged with aggravated battery by a person detained in jail, a first degree felony.
