SANTA ROSA BEACH – A man who was so intoxicated he had trouble standing up when deputies came to his house admitted to just driving home from a local bar.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies had been called to a local bar in reference to a hit and run.

Witnesses described a black Chevrolet Tahoe and told deputies that they were pretty sure it belonged to a 28-year-old man who was a regular in the bar.

The deputy had given the suspect a ride home from the same bar a month earlier, according to the man’s WCSO arrest report.

The deputy remembered his address and drove there, where he found a black Chevrolet Tahoe in the driveway.

The man had trouble standing and swayed from side to side when he walked, the deputy noted.

After being read his rights, he said he’d had too much to drink but had driven home anyway.

He denied striking any other vehicle, though. The deputy examined the Tahoe and found a fresh scratch at the same height as damage to the victim’s vehicle.

The suspect was also wearing the same clothing described to the deputy at the bar.

He was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving damage to property.
