CRESTVIEW — A Palm Beach County man in prison for almost 10 years has died, apparently of injuries suffered in a fight with another inmate.
Raymond P. Scholtes, who was 35, was in the Okaloosa Correctional Institution when he died.
His death is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, with assistance from the Department of Correction's Office of the Inspector General, according to an emailed statement from the DOC.
A source inside the prison said Scholtes was beaten July 1 in an area that did not have video camera surveillance. The source, who requested anonymity, said Scholtes was taken to a hospital, where he died July 8.
Scholtes had been convicted of robbery and aggravated battery on a person over 65 in September 2007.
The DOC did not provide additional information, citing the active investigation and federal privacy rules.
