BAKER — A family is grieving the tragic death of a 3-year-old boy who jumped out of the back of a truck and was run over by the trailer it was towing.

The incident, which happened late Sunday morning on a sod farm near Baker, is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Local fire departments responded initially but could do nothing other than to declare the child dead. Joshua Ryles was 3.

His father, 36-year-old Christopher Ryles of Baker, was driving the truck when the accident occurred, according to preliminary reports. An Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office deputy arrived at 5515 Galliver Cutoff responding to a 911 call in which someone reported that he had backed over a child.

Joshua was pronounced dead just after 11 a.m., the report said.

The truck he had been riding in was towing a trailer on private property when the accident occurred. The FHP report indicated that he'd been riding in the bed of the pickup when he fell out and was run over.

Christopher told the deputy that his son had jumped out of the back of the truck. The deputy noted that one side of the trailer had been elevated with a forklift, likely by the father, the report said.

Alcohol was not related to the fatal accident and FHP reported charges are pending an investigation.
