CRESTVIEW — A Crestview man was arrested after discharging his firearm in public Sunday according to a report from Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.
An OCSO deputy responded to a call of shots fired on Sunday at 6040 John Nix Road and made contact with the victim. The victim told OCSO that the defendant, Phillip Michael Alan Merritt, got into an argument over property around 10:20 a.m. Merritt then armed himself with a small handgun and discharged it several times into the wooded area and shot the victim's front passenger tire, valued at $400, the report said.
Merritt then vandalized the victim's passenger side of the vehicle by slamming his knee into both doors valued at $1,000. He left in a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche, according to a report.
At a traffic stop on Poverty Creek Road and Airport Road, both Merritt and a witness were detained from inside the vehicle. The witness told OCSO he observed Merritt firing multiple shots into the air outside the residence. Merritt's girlfriend also surrendered a small handgun from inside the residence that matched the description from the victim and witness.
Merritt was arrested for displaying a firearm during a felony, discharging a firearm in public and damaging property valued over $1,000.
