The National Junior College Athletic Association has released its first regular season national Division 1 men’s and women’s basketball rankings, and both the Shelton State men’s and women’s teams are among the nation’s Top 25 in the rankings.
The Shelton State women, who are 10-0 going into Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. home game against Wallace-Selma, remain at No. 4. The Lady Bucs were ranked No. 4 in the 2016-17 preseason rankings. Gulf Coast State is the women’s top-ranked team.
The Shelton State men went unranked going into the preseason but check in at No. 20 in the first regular season ranking. The Buccaneers are 9-0 going into Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. home game against Wallace-Selma.
South Plains is the men’s No. 1 JUCO team this week.
Shelton State’s honors this week also included freshman guard Cierra Johnson being named the Alabama Community College Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for November 28-December 4. It’s the second week in a row the Mobile native has captured the honor. Johnson scored 15 points against Itawamba, 21 against East Mississippi Community College and 27 points, in 21 minutes, against Lurleen B. Wallace to win her latest honor. For the week, she averaged 21 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals.
