LAUREL HILL — A 19-year-old Laurel Hill man was arrested Tuesday and charged with the death of his passenger in an Oct. 16 wreck.
Chase James Paul Locke was charged with DUI manslaughter and released to his parents on a $50,000 bond. He will wear a GPS monitor and must abstain from alcohol and drugs while out on bond, according to his Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office arrest report.
According to news accounts, Locke was driving west on Steele Mill Creek Road near Laurel Hill in north Okaloosa County about 4:30 a.m. when he lost control of his pickup truck.
The truck went into the ditch and struck an embankment. Locke suffered minor injuries, but his 19-year-old passenger, Benny Lee Howell of Laurel Hill, died.
Locke's blood alcohol results came back recently and he was found to be over the legal limit, according to Eddie Elmore, public affairs spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol.
The investigation is still ongoing. Investigators are waiting on additional lab results, Elmore said.
Neither man was wearing a seat belt, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
